Day 1: Chogoria/Mount Meru Bandas

Drive from Nairobi to Chogoria town for 3.5hrs, and then take a 4x4WD vehicle to the forest clearance, 16km from where the walk starts. You will walk for 16km through the forest along the dirt and sometimes very muddy road for 4hrs to reach Mount Meru Bandas at 2950m for lunch and afternoon walks. You will have dinner and camp for overnight at Mt. Meru Bandas.

Day 2: After breakfast leave for Lake Ellis (3,400m). This hike will take about 5hrs with a detour to Kathita waterfalls. Dinner and overnight at the camp nearby the lake.

Day 3: Hike on to Mintos tarn (4,200m), a 5.5hrs trek. Picnic lunch will be served along the way. Have dinner and camp for overnight by the lake.

Day 4: After breakfast leave for Austrian Hut (4,790m) 950m ascent.  The hike will take about 4hrs and this day you will stay in the hut because it is very cold here.

Day 5: Leave camp by 4.30am and climb up the steep scree for about 1.5 to 2hours to reach Point Lenana 4985m. Depending on your pace and conditions, you will be at the top by 5.00am to watch the African sunrise and If the sky is clear right across the southern part of Kenya, you will be able to view the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro above the clouds over 340 kilometres away.  Then descend to Mackinder’s for breakfast and after a short rest descend to the Met station on the Naromoru track, traversing the steep marshy section known as the Vertical Bog. Returning by another route gives a fine contrast to your hike, and is only 3 to 4hours walking, have lunch and be picked up from this point back to Nairobi.

All quoted costs include:

  • Transport from Nyeri/ Naromoru/Nanyuki to Park gates and back
  • All park entrance and camping fees.
  • The services of a hiking guide, a cook and porters to carry your bags.
  • All meals while on the mountain
  • Accommodation on the mountain in the huts or in comfortable tents.
  • Rescue from the mountain in case of an illness (by road only)

Excludes:

    • Personal hiking gears like sleeping bag, warm clothes, etc
    • Personal insurance
    • Accommodation in Nairobi before and after the trek.
    • Drinks like sodas, beer but boiled drinking water will be provided on the mountain
    • Costs incurred to changes made on the agreed itinerary
